Digital Gaming is Game On

"Never have I seen a community of young developers not only incredibly interested in supporting each other, but truly eager to be a part of a rapidly growing industry. Their vibrancy and dedication is a big part of why it's so exciting to be in Australian game dev right now"

David Gaider, Creative Director, Summerfall Studios

The Australian Digital Gaming market has become quite the juggernaut, with Australian-made games pulling in huge global sales and winning major industry awards. The breakout hit of 2021 was Unpacking, a puzzle game from a Brisbane-based studio, which sold 100,000 copies in its first 10 days on the market and was named 'Game of the Year' by Eurogamer.

According to Global Australia, in 2021, one in every ten games available on Apple’s new arcade video game platform, was made in Australia or New Zealand.

"Australia is a great place to make video games."

Andy Wilson, COO of Sledgehammer Games

Australia’s game development studios increased revenue by 23%, with 73% of studios developing their own intellectual property and 89% had either stable or increased revenue. Our digital developers are recognised world-wide and can take on international projects to fill in the gaps to make the production a 24-hour service, while Europe and America sleep.

The Federal Government has announced a Digital Games tax offset of 30% which will come into effect in July 2022 and State Governments offer a further 10-15% rebate. Australia also has strong intellectual property rights, giving investors the confidence in return on their investment. This should attract even more international gaming developers to the Australian market, looking like a boom in this industry will be imminent.
